Notes

  • This procedure only needs to be performed once on each server. If you are rebuilding a server that was already upgraded, you need not do it again unless there is a newer version you want to upgrade to. This documentation is provided to inform you of the operations performed.
  • The screenshots below were captured using the HP Integrated Lights Out remote management interface. This was onyl for the sake of being able to capture the images. You would do it directly from the server viewing the progress on the locally attached monitor.

Goals

Upgrade system BIOS to latest version

Computers, of course, need software to do useful things. You may very well understand that a computer has an operating system which is our usual interface to computing. However, there is a layer beneath this. The BIOS, which stands of Basic Input/Output System is responsible for low level management of our hardware, and eventually deciding where the operating system is, and how to start it.

Like all software, despite one's best efforts, there will be defects that make it to end users. Sometimes they have little or no impact on most cases. As we do for things like L300 Firmware Upgrade and Windows Update, we want to make sure we are using the latest versions of the software to avoid the risk of encountering a defect that has already been identified and fixed.

Prerequisites

In order to program the BIOS it we need to prepare a special bootable CD or flash drive. The version that we are installing now will be archived on the EJP Recovery Drive. Should you need to search for a newer version, you can begin with the links in Server Hardware Details.

Procedures

Prepare the bootable media

  • There wil be a folder named HP Proliant M110 G7 BIOS Upgrade on the EJP Recovery Drive
  • This folder contains instructions on how to prepare the bootable drive.
  • The impleest thing would be to use the ROMpaq CD which contains an ISO image for a bootable CD
